Proposal For Solo Performance
I didn't do much last year so I really couldn't make any comments on that. The only thing that I think I did great is actually choosing the theorist. Until a week ago I still felt like I have set myself up to a big task, a task that is hard to accomplish since I couldn't find any distinctive definition of Dario Fo's style in addition to what is actually going on in his play. The lack of information is what intimidates me. But now I feel like maybe it is actually not too bad. After watching several Dario Fo's performances, I come to the conclusion that the content of his play does't really matter, all I need is his format of doing things, which is turning the introduction of the play to a circus performance, and then perform the play using the form of a monologuing comedy piece. I can definitely do a stand up comedy, I have done it before so I think I can one hundred percent redo what I did before. Although I'm not sure that I'm a good joke writer or an A1 performer, I still feel like it won't be a hard task as long as my topic is something that can make people relate to it.
The script that I'm thinking about now is something like me lampooning China. The rant would be consists of these few components: Chinese propaganda of our chairman "Xi"; Chinese News and Police Officers; Stereotypical questions for students who study aboard from their family. I have some ideas in mind already and I think I need to watch the way Dario Fo delivers his jokes in those youtube video of his plays and connect them with the script that I bought. Because there are still a lot of things I need to figure out about him before I put my thoughts into actual practices.
The big problem of my solo performance would be the introduction part, which is the circus-ish play. Just like my comedy piece that would happen later on, I need to know what is actually going on in Dario Fo's clown fiesta, because from the youtube video that I linked above, I see more than just a goofy musical play. I see characters, silly ones and serious ones, and I'm scared to make any assumptions for writting my script for the circus party. I don't know anything and it is highly likely that there are certain connections between the characters that show up in the circus and the characters that would show up later in the actual story. At the end of the day, it just means that I still have a lot of digging to do.
This solo performance project would be quite a challenge for me since I have never put in actual work into writting something funny as a script for a performance and fine tuning it. And I think this experience would definitely improve my skills as a performer, a joke writer and a story deliverer. I want to entertain people using this performace and I'm just hoping that everything about this project would come out great.
